The ability to play well with topspin will stand you in good stead throughout your playing career.

It is a skill that is underestimated by many who would much rather play with screw and side spin, than play a shot with controlled topspin.

Many players today have never played billiards and often do not realise the advantage playing well with topspin can bring.

Some do not even make sure they raise their bridge hand to ensure that they strike well above centre,Fig1.

By addressing the cue ball above centre, topspin will be added to the strength of the shot and will increase the distance that the ball travels.

It is a vital shot - which should be in every players armoury.

Topspin is particularly useful when it is necessary to open a pack of reds. There will be more displacement with spin on the cue ball than without it.
